Whitespace (also negative space) refers to the empty space between and around design elements. It doesn't have to be white - any unfilled space counts. Types: Micro whitespace (between lines, letters), Macro whitespace (between sections, around images). Functions: Improves readability, creates visual hierarchy, directs attention, conveys premium feel, reduces cognitive load. Apple and Google are masters of whitespace.
