Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing website content to be cited as a source in answers from AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Overviews. Unlike classic SEO, GEO does not target positions in result lists but whether the AI names and links your brand. GoldenWing Creative Studios in Vienna shows this is measurable: around 2,500 AI citations in three months and up to an 80 percent citation share for agency queries. This guide explains how AI systems pick their sources and which seven factors make your content quotable.
What is GEO – and how does it differ from SEO and AEO?
More and more people no longer ask a search engine but an AI directly. The answer is not a list of links but a finished text – and it cites only a handful of sources. If you are not among them, you are invisible to these users. GEO is the discipline that changes exactly that.
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization): visibility in classic result lists on Google and Bing – measured in positions and clicks.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): optimizing for direct answer formats like featured snippets and voice assistants – measured in answer placements.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): optimizing so that generative AI uses your content as a source, cites it and names your brand – measured in citations and brand mentions.
The three disciplines do not compete – they build on each other: without solid indexing (SEO) there are no answer placements (AEO), and without both there are no AI citations (GEO).
How AI systems choose their sources
When ChatGPT, Copilot or Google AI answer a current question, they do not rely on training data but run a real search in the background – so-called grounding. ChatGPT Search and Microsoft Copilot use the Bing index, Google AI Overviews use the Google index, and Perplexity combines its own crawler with Bing. From the top results, the model extracts passages that answer the question directly – and exactly these passages get cited.
No index, no citations
The first consequence is trivial but constantly overlooked: if you are missing from the Bing index, you do not exist for ChatGPT and Copilot – regardless of how good your Google rankings are. Setting up Bing Webmaster Tools, submitting your sitemap and enabling IndexNow is mandatory, not optional.
What makes a source quotable
- The answer appears in the first sentences of a section – not after three paragraphs of introduction.
- Concrete numbers, price ranges and comparisons an AI can quote verbatim.
- A clearly recognizable entity: who is writing, with what expertise, from which country?
- Structured data (Organization, FAQPage, Article schema) that explains the context to the machine.
- Visible freshness – AI systems prefer maintained, dated content.
The 7 success factors for AI citations
- Answer-first structure: every page and section starts with the direct answer in one or two sentences. Explanation and context follow – never the other way around.
- Concrete numbers instead of platitudes: “SEO in Austria costs €800 to €3,000 per month” is quotable. “Costs depend on many factors” is not.
- FAQ with FAQPage schema: frequent questions in the users' own wording, answered in two to three sentences – the most common form in which AI answers adopt content.
- Organization schema and entity consistency: a sitewide Organization schema with founder, address and sameAs profiles plus consistent brand mentions in body copy. The AI has to learn that your brand is a real, locatable organization.
- Comparison and list formats: “best X in Y” comparisons, tables and rankings are cited disproportionately often – they directly answer the most common AI question form (“which agency/tool…”).
- Make freshness visible: years in titles, a maintained last-updated date and regular data updates. Outdated content drops out of the answers.
- Technical accessibility: clean indexing on Google and Bing, fast load times, an llms.txt with your key facts and no content reachable only via JavaScript.
Measuring GEO: how to see your AI visibility
Bing Webmaster Tools – AI Performance
The free AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools shows how often your pages were cited in Microsoft Copilot and partner AIs, for which grounding queries and with what citation share versus other sources. Currently the most precise freely available GEO measurement tool.
AI trackers
Tools like the SE Ranking AI tracker regularly ask defined AI systems the same questions (“Best SEO agency in Vienna?”) and log whether your brand is mentioned or linked. This turns the feeling of “we show up in ChatGPT” into a time series.
Google Analytics 4
Referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com shows how many users actually click through to your website from AI answers. In GA4 you can create a dedicated “AI Assistant” channel group for this.
Case study: GEO at GoldenWing in numbers
From 2025, GoldenWing consistently rebuilt its own website around the seven factors – answer-first intros, price ranges on all service pages, FAQ schema, a sitewide Organization schema and a listicle series with comparisons. The measurements after three months (May to July 2026):
- Around 2,500 AI citations in Microsoft Copilot and partner AIs (Bing Webmaster Tools, AI Performance), peaking at about 100 citations per day.
- 60 to 80 percent citation share for queries like “best B2B SEO agency Austria” – when the AI answers, it predominantly cites GoldenWing.
- ChatGPT links goldenwing.at in 58.8 percent of topically relevant source answers (SE Ranking AI tracker, 20 prompts, July 2026).
- 81 cited pages: it is not the homepage that gets cited most, but guides and comparison pages with concrete numbers – the AI marketing guide alone over 400 times.
The most important pattern: AI systems cite content, not brands. If you want to be cited, you need pages that answer questions with numbers – brand awareness follows from the citations, not the other way around.
GEO checklist: 10 points for your business
- Set up Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, enable IndexNow.
- Start every important page with an answer-first paragraph (direct answer in sentence one).
- State prices, numbers and timeframes wherever customers ask about them.
- Add FAQ sections with FAQPage schema to service and guide pages.
- Implement a sitewide Organization schema with founder, address and sameAs profiles.
- Mention your brand consistently in body copy (not only in the logo).
- Create at least one comparison or list asset per core topic.
- Maintain last-updated dates and keep years current.
- Provide an llms.txt with key facts about your company and services.
- Measure AI visibility monthly: Bing AI Performance, AI tracker, GA4 referrals.
Conclusion: GEO is SEO with a higher bar
GEO does not replace SEO – it raises the bar. Content no longer just has to rank; it has to be so clear, concrete and credible that a machine quotes it verbatim. Building answer-first structures, schema and measurable facts today secures the citation slots your competitors will fight over in two years. GoldenWing, an AI agency in Vienna, advises on GEO strategy and implementation – from the first audit to measurable AI visibility; the foundation is solid SEO management.
