In Austria in 2026, SEO costs between roughly 800 and over 5,000 euros per month, depending on competition and scope. Local and regional SMBs usually pay 800 to 2,500 euros, national or e-commerce projects 2,000 to 4,000 euros, and highly competitive markets 3,000 to 5,000 euros and more. The price is driven not by the agency margin but by the work behind it. The only sensible measure is what SEO brings in, not the ranking alone.
Not all SEO is the same
SEO for 300 euros a month and SEO for 4,000 euros a month are not the same product. They just share a name. One is often an automated report with a few tips, the other is real work on technology, content and authority. A pure price comparison without a comparison of services therefore regularly leads to the wrong decision.
Behind the word SEO there are in truth three very different areas of work. Technical SEO makes sure that Google can read your site cleanly, understand it and load it quickly in the first place. Content SEO answers the questions your customers actually type in, and does so better than the competition. Authority building makes sure that other sites and sources link to you, so that Google trusts you on competitive terms. A cheap offer usually covers only the first area, and only superficially. The value arises only when all three come together, and that is exactly why real SEO takes time and therefore budget.
The price ranges at a glance
| Segment | Monthly budget | What is covered |
|---|---|---|
| Local / regional (SMB) | 800 to 2,500 β¬ | One location, manageable competition |
| National / e-commerce | 2,000 to 4,000 β¬ | More pages, more topics, more competition |
| Competitive / premium | 3,000 to over 5,000 β¬ | Hard-fought money keywords |
| Hourly rate Austria | 100 to 180 β¬ | For extra services and consulting |
- Local / regional (SMB): 800 to 2,500 euros per month. One location, manageable competition, local visibility.
- National / e-commerce: 2,000 to 4,000 euros per month. More pages, more topics, more competition.
- Competitive / premium: 3,000 to over 5,000 euros per month. Hard-fought money keywords, intensive implementation.
For comparison: SEO hourly rates in Austria are usually between 100 and 180 euros. Anyone who offers significantly less than that generally saves on the implementation, not on the margin.
What does that mean for a real budget? A package for 1,000 euros per month corresponds, at a 130 euro hourly rate, to roughly seven to eight real working hours. That is enough for a small, clearly defined local task, but not enough to advance technology, content and authority in parallel in a competitive market. At 2,500 euros we are talking about roughly 18 to 25 hours per month, so noticeably more ongoing substance. If someone promises you βcomplete SEOβ for 400 euros a month, do a quick calculation: three hours of work per month move very little in a serious competitive environment. The number is not bad per se, it just has to fit the task.
The four factors that determine the price
1. Competition
In a competitive market like βSEO agency Viennaβ, every spot is hard-won. We know this from our own experience, because this term is a work in progress for us too. For βseo agentur wienβ we currently stand at position 27.9, with 12,081 impressions and a search volume of around 1,600. That means: the demand is there, we are being seen, but we are not yet where the clicks happen. This very path from page three to page one is the expensive part. More competition simply means more effort for the same rank.
2. Scope
How many pages, topics and languages need to be covered? A single location is something different from twenty, and a niche topic is something different from a broad product range.
3. Consulting or implementation
The biggest price difference. Is the work only analysis and recommendations, or also implementation: fixing technology, writing content, building authority? Consulting is cheaper, but it only works once someone actually implements the recommendations.
4. Classic or including AI search
Classic Google is the standard. Anyone who also wants to be visible in AI answers, visible in AI search as well, gets more service and pays accordingly. In 2026 this is no longer a luxury but a growing part of visibility.
Where budget works fastest
Not every SEO budget spent works equally fast. The most economical positions are those just outside the first page, in the range of rank 11 to 20, often called βstriking distanceβ. These terms already rank, they only need the last push to move into the high-click area. From our own data we know how big this lever is: over 180 days, 556 keywords sit in exactly this window between position 11 and 20. With a total of 2,687 clicks from 1.61 million impressions, our click rate is 0.17 percent and the average position is 27.5. So the biggest part of the potential lies not in inventing new topics but in sharpening what almost ranks already.
These numbers also explain why SEO budgets should stay stable. In the same 180 days our traffic halved between June and August. Visibility is not a possession, it is a state that erodes without ongoing work. Anyone who lets a budget run only until the first results arrive gives away exactly what they paid for.
Rankings are not a result
A ranking that brings no purchase-ready visitors is vanity. We measure SEO by inquiries, revenue and visibility on high-intent terms, not by positions for search terms nobody types in.
A concrete pattern from our work: for a client in the construction sector, the commercially valuable service terms were practically ownerless in organic search, because the competition almost only ranked its own company name. That is exactly where purchase-ready demand arises, often at significantly lower cost than in more competitive industries. The same case shows how quickly such a start can look: six weeks after the relaunch, the site went from zero to 777 impressions, brought the first three ranking keywords and 51 sessions. These are deliberately small, honest numbers, not a promise of success, but a visible start in a market where nobody had claimed the valuable terms. An SEO budget is therefore only as good as the keyword strategy behind it.
Why SEO runs monthly
SEO is not a piece of furniture you buy once. Google keeps changing its evaluation, competitors catch up and user behavior shifts. Part of the monthly budget keeps what exists stable, part builds something new. Anyone who stops SEO after three months usually loses a good part of what was built.
SEO or Google Ads, or both?
A common question is whether the SEO budget would be better invested in Google Ads. Both have their place, they just solve different problems. Google Ads brings visibility immediately as long as budget flows, and is suited to when you want to quickly test whether a demand turns into inquiries at all. Getting started usually costs 400 to 800 euros per month, a solid standard setup 1,000 to 3,000 euros, and management is often billed at 15 to 20 percent of the ad budget.
The difference is fundamental: with Ads you rent visibility, with SEO you build it. If you switch off Ads, the visibility is gone the same day. If you stop SEO, what was built stays for a while and erodes slowly. In practice the combination is often the most sensible: Ads cover the high-intent terms in the short term, while SEO creates the lasting foundation in the background. If you need a fast, reliable technical basis for this, you should also think about the website, whose price range we break down here.
How to recognize a reputable SEO agency
A reputable SEO agency in Vienna asks questions before naming a price: How tough is your market, what is your goal, what is your starting point? It discloses what it concretely does, makes its numbers transparent and does not promise a number one guarantee (which nobody can seriously give). Anyone who sells SEO at a flat price without these questions is mainly selling time, not results.
