Shopify vs. WooCommerce: Which Store Is Better?
Do you want to start an online store or migrate your existing store to a new platform? Then you are facing one of the most important decisions in e-commerce: Shopify or WooCommerce?
Both platforms are among the most widely used store solutions. Exact market shares depend heavily on the measurement method. But which solution fits your business better? As a web design agency with a team of over 13 years of experience in developing e-commerce solutions, we at GoldenWing have used both platforms in client projects.
In this comprehensive comparison, we analyze Shopify and WooCommerce across 20 criteria, from costs and SEO capabilities to scalability. By the end, you will know exactly which platform is the right choice for your Austrian online store.
Shopify and WooCommerce at a Glance
Before we get into the detailed comparison, here is a quick overview of both platforms:
Shopify is a hosted all-in-one e-commerce solution founded in Canada in 2006. You pay a monthly fee and get everything from a single source: hosting, security, updates and a store builder.
WooCommerce is a free open-source plugin for WordPress that was released in 2011. It turns any WordPress website into a fully functional online store. According to the WordPress.org directory, WooCommerce has over 7 million active installations, making it one of the most widely used e-commerce solutions in the world.
The fundamental difference: Shopify is a SaaS solution (Software as a Service), while WooCommerce is a self-hosted solution. This has far-reaching effects on costs, flexibility and maintenance effort.
The Big 20-Criteria Comparison
Here is our comprehensive feature comparison of both platforms, based on our team's more than 13 years of experience in e-commerce projects:
| Criterion | Shopify | WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | 1-3 days | 3-14 days |
| Technical know-how | Low | Medium to high |
| Monthly costs (basic) | From €32/month (€24 with annual billing) | From €5/month (hosting) |
| Transaction fees | 2% to 0.2% depending on plan (without Shopify Payments) | None (payment gateway only) |
| Hosting included | Yes | No (arrange it yourself) |
| SSL certificate | Included | Depends on host (often included) |
| Number of products | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Design templates | Hundreds (some free) | Very many (many free) |
| Plugin/app ecosystem | 16,000+ apps | 70,000+ plugins (WordPress directory) |
| SEO features | Good | Very good |
| Blogging features | Basic | Excellent (WordPress) |
| Multilingual support | Via apps | Via plugins (WPML, Polylang) |
| Multi-currency | Included (Shopify Markets) | Via plugins |
| POS integration | Shopify POS (excellent) | Via plugins (limited) |
| Dropshipping | Very good (for example DSers) | Good (AliDropship etc.) |
| B2B features | Shopify Plus | Via plugins |
| API access | Yes (GraphQL + REST) | Yes (REST + webhooks) |
| Backup & security | Automatic | Manage yourself |
| Uptime guarantee | No public guarantee (Plus: SLA possible) | Depends on host |
| Support | 24/7 support (chat, depends on plan) | Community + host support |
This comparison shows that no platform is superior in all areas. The choice depends on your individual requirements.
Costs Over 3 Years
Cost is often the deciding factor when choosing a platform. We created an example 3-year comparison for a typical Austrian online store with 200-500 products. These are assumptions, not quotes: the Shopify plans and fees reflect the status of October 2026, while prices for apps, plugins, hosting and themes differ by provider:
Shopify Costs Over 3 Years
| Cost item | Monthly | 3 years |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Basic plan | €32 | €1,152 |
| Premium theme (one-time) | - | €350 |
| Apps (5-8 essential) | €80-150 | €2,880-5,400 |
| Shopify transaction fees (at €10,000/month revenue, only without Shopify Payments) | €0-200 | €0-7,200 |
| Domain | €1.25 | €45 |
| Total | €4,427-14,147 |
WooCommerce Costs Over 3 Years
| Cost item | Monthly | 3 years |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting (managed WordPress) | €15-30 | €540-1,080 |
| Premium theme (one-time) | - | €60-100 |
| Plugins (5-8 essential) | €20-50 | €720-1,800 |
| Transaction fees (payment gateway) | €30-100 | €1,080-3,600 |
| Domain | €1 | €36 |
| Maintenance & updates | €20-50 | €720-1,800 |
| Total | €3,156-8,416 |
Result: In this example calculation, WooCommerce is roughly 30-40% cheaper than Shopify over 3 years. The cost advantage grows the more revenue you make, because Shopify's transaction fees increase. Keep in mind, though: WooCommerce requires more maintenance effort on your side or hiring an agency.

SEO Comparison: Which Platform Ranks Better?
SEO is crucial for the long-term success of your online store. Here is the detailed comparison:
Shopify SEO
Shopify has invested heavily in SEO in recent years. The platform offers:
- Automatic sitemap generation: updated with every change
- Canonical tags: set automatically to avoid duplicate content
- SSL/HTTPS: standard for all stores
- Structured data: basic schema markup for products is built in
- Mobile-first: all themes are responsive
Limitations of Shopify SEO:
- URL structure is partly fixed (e.g. /collections/, /products/)
- Robots.txt cannot be fully customized
- Blog functionality is limited compared to WordPress
- No native breadcrumb customization without apps
- Limited control over page speed (theme-dependent)
WooCommerce SEO
WooCommerce benefits from the entire WordPress SEO ecosystem:
- Yoast SEO / Rank Math: the most powerful SEO plugins around
- Full URL control: every URL can be freely defined
- Robots.txt & .htaccess: full control over crawling
- Schema markup: detailed structured data via plugins
- Blog integration: WordPress is the best blogging platform in the world
- Technical SEO: full control over headers, redirects and canonical tags
SEO verdict: WooCommerce has a clear advantage in SEO. The combination of WordPress blogging and plugins like Yoast SEO offers significantly more possibilities than Shopify. If organic traffic is your main channel, WooCommerce is the better choice.

Performance Comparison
Your store's load time directly affects the conversion rate. You can test your store's performance with our performance checker.
Shopify Performance
Shopify uses a global CDN (Content Delivery Network). Load times depend on theme, apps and content. Google's targets for good Core Web Vitals are:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): up to 2.5 s
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): up to 200 ms
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): up to 0.1
Shopify stores generally load quickly and consistently. The downside: you have little influence on server performance. If apps slow down the store, your optimization options are limited.
WooCommerce Performance
With WooCommerce, performance depends heavily on hosting:
- Shared hosting: noticeably slower and inconsistent (not recommended)
- Managed WordPress hosting: usually solid response times, depending on the provider
- VPS/dedicated: very fast when configured well
With the right setup (managed hosting + caching plugin + CDN), WooCommerce can be faster than Shopify. But optimization requires know-how or professional support.
Performance verdict: Shopify delivers consistent performance without effort. WooCommerce can be faster but requires active optimization. For store operators who are less technically versed, Shopify has the advantage here.
Design and Themes
The design of your online store significantly influences your customers' trust and the conversion rate. Both platforms offer different approaches:
Shopify Themes
The official Shopify Theme Store currently offers hundreds of themes, including free ones. All themes are reviewed by Shopify and must meet requirements such as:
- Mobile responsiveness
- Accessibility (Lighthouse accessibility score of at least 90)
- Performance standards
- Regular updates
The Shopify Theme Editor (Online Store 2.0) enables drag-and-drop customization without code. For deeper customization, Shopify uses its own template language Liquid, which takes some time to learn.
Premium themes are paid, and prices vary by theme. The quality is consistently high, but the selection is limited compared to WooCommerce.
WooCommerce Themes
There are very many themes for WooCommerce. ThemeForest alone has a large selection of WooCommerce-compatible templates. On top of that come themes from Astarter, GeneratePress, Kadence and many other providers.
The price range is wide:
- Free themes: Storefront (the official WooCommerce theme), Astra, Neve
- Premium themes: prices vary by provider
- Page builders: Elementor, Divi, WPBakery enable pixel-perfect design
The advantage of WooCommerce: you have complete design freedom. With a page builder, you can design any shop page imaginable, without a line of code. The downside: the quality of themes varies widely. Not every theme is fast or secure.
Design verdict: Shopify offers curated quality with less choice. WooCommerce offers maximum flexibility with more responsibility on your side. For a custom web design, WooCommerce is the better foundation.
Payment Providers for Austria
For the Austrian market, certain payment providers are especially important. Here is the comparison:
Shopify Payment Options (AT)
- Shopify Payments (powered by Stripe): credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay
- Klarna: invoice, installment payment (very popular in AT)
- PayPal: standard in Austria
- EPS bank transfer: Austrian online banking (directly via Shopify Payments, to be activated in the admin)
- Sofortüberweisung: widely used across DACH
- Amazon Pay: for Prime customers
Important: Without Shopify Payments, additional transaction fees apply (as of October 2026: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, 0.2% on Plus), on top of the payment gateway's fees.
WooCommerce Payment Options (AT)
- WooPayments (formerly WooCommerce Payments, powered by Stripe): check availability and terms per country
- Klarna: official plugin available
- PayPal: native WooCommerce plugin
- EPS bank transfer: via Mollie or Unzer
- Sofortüberweisung: via various gateways
- Purchase on invoice: via Klarna, Unzer or PayPal
- Bancontact, iDEAL, Giropay: for international customers
- Cryptocurrencies: possible via plugins
Payment verdict: Both platforms support all relevant payment methods for Austria. WooCommerce offers more flexibility in gateway choice and has no additional transaction fees.
Scalability
How well does your store grow with your business?
Shopify Scaling
Shopify scales excellently. The plans differ, among other things, in staff accounts:
- Shopify Basic: Owner account, no additional staff accounts
- Shopify: Up to 5 staff accounts
- Shopify Advanced: Up to 15 staff accounts
- Shopify Plus: Enterprise level, unlimited staff accounts (from €2,100/month, as of October 2026)
Flash sales, Black Friday and traffic spikes are absorbed automatically. You do not have to worry about anything. Shopify Plus additionally offers customizable checkout flows and multi-store management.
WooCommerce Scaling
WooCommerce can also scale strongly, but it requires the right infrastructure:
- Shared hosting: Suitable for small stores
- Managed hosting (Cloudways, Kinsta): Suitable for growing stores
- VPS/dedicated server: For high loads with a suitable configuration
- Cloud hosting (AWS, Google Cloud): Flexibly scalable
WooCommerce is also used by larger stores. However: scaling requires technical know-how and regular optimization.
Scaling verdict: Shopify scales more easily and without technical effort. WooCommerce can scale just as well but requires server management and optimization. For fast-growing stores without their own tech team, Shopify is the safer choice.
When Is Shopify the Better Choice?
Based on our experience at GoldenWing, we recommend Shopify in the following situations:
1. You want to start quickly
If your store should be live in 1-3 days, Shopify is unbeatable. Setup is intuitive, and you need no technical knowledge.
2. You do not have a technical team
Shopify takes care of hosting, security, updates and backups. You can focus fully on your product and marketing.
3. You sell primarily through social media
Shopify's integration with Instagram, TikTok and Facebook is industry-leading. Social commerce is seamlessly integrated.
4. You need a POS system
Shopify POS is one of the best point-of-sale systems on the market. If you also sell in a physical location, Shopify is ideal.
5. You do dropshipping
The app ecosystem for dropshipping (DSers, Spocket, CJ Dropshipping) is best developed on Shopify.
6. Your budget is €50-200/month
In this range, Shopify gives you a solid overall package without hidden costs. The monthly fees are predictable.
7. You plan to sell internationally
Shopify Markets makes internationalization easy: multi-currency, local domains and automatic tax calculation.
When Is WooCommerce the Better Choice?
We recommend WooCommerce in these cases:
1. You need maximum flexibility
No other shop system offers as many customization options. Every function, every design and every workflow can be shaped individually.
2. You already have a WordPress website
If your website already runs on WordPress, WooCommerce is the logical extension. The integration is seamless and cost-efficient.
3. SEO is your main channel
The combination of WordPress content marketing and a WooCommerce store is unbeatable for organic traffic. No other system offers as much SEO control.
4. You want to save costs in the long run
As revenue grows, WooCommerce becomes significantly cheaper than Shopify, because there are no percentage-based transaction fees. This is especially relevant for stores with high basket values.
5. You have a technical team or an agency
With technical know-how (or an experienced agency like GoldenWing), you can tailor WooCommerce perfectly to your needs.
6. You need special functions
Whether configurators, booking systems, member areas or complex pricing logic, everything is possible with WooCommerce plugins and custom development.
7. You want full data control
With WooCommerce, all data sits on your server. You do not depend on a platform and can switch hosts at any time.
8. Your content marketing is central
WordPress is the best blogging platform in the world. If content marketing is part of your strategy, you benefit enormously from the native blog integration.
Migration: From Shopify to WooCommerce (and Vice Versa)
What if you already have a store and want to switch? Here are the most important points:
From Shopify to WooCommerce
Migrating from Shopify to WooCommerce is the more common route, mostly because store operators are looking for more flexibility or lower costs.
What can be migrated:
- Products (incl. variants, images, descriptions)
- Customers (name, email, addresses)
- Orders (history)
- Blog posts
- Pages
What is NOT migrated automatically:
- Design/theme (has to be set up again)
- Apps/functions (have to be replaced with plugins)
- URL structure (301 redirects needed!)
- Reviews (only via third-party tools)
Recommended tools: Cart2Cart, LitExtension or manual export/import via CSV.
Time required: 1-4 weeks, depending on store size and complexity.
From WooCommerce to Shopify
This route is rarer, but it happens, mostly when the maintenance effort becomes too high.
Migration via Shopify's import tool:
- Products via CSV
- Customers via CSV
- Orders (only with Shopify partner tools)
Important for every migration:
- Set up 301 redirects (essential for SEO!)
- Check Google Search Console after the migration
- Reconfigure all payment providers
- Inform existing customers
We are happy to help with a migration. Contact our team for a free initial consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is Shopify or WooCommerce better for beginners?
Shopify is the better choice for absolute beginners. The platform is ready to use immediately, and you need no technical prior knowledge. WooCommerce requires at least basic WordPress knowledge: installation, theme configuration and plugin management take some time to learn. However: if you already work with WordPress, WooCommerce is just as easy to use.
Can I move my Shopify store to WooCommerce later?
Yes, a migration is possible at any time. Tools like Cart2Cart or LitExtension transfer products, customers and orders automatically. It is important that you set up 301 redirects for all URLs so that your SEO ranking is preserved. The move takes 1-4 weeks, depending on store size. We recommend having an experienced agency support the migration.
Which platform is more secure?
Shopify is very secure by default: PCI DSS Level 1 compliance is included, and Shopify takes care of all security updates. With WooCommerce, you are responsible yourself: WordPress core, plugins and themes must be updated regularly. With a good managed hosting provider and security plugins like Wordfence or Sucuri, WooCommerce is also very secure, but it requires active maintenance.
Which platform is better for B2B stores?
For B2B e-commerce, Shopify Plus has dedicated features: customer-specific prices, minimum order quantities and customizable checkout flows. However, Shopify Plus costs from €2,100/month (as of October 2026). WooCommerce offers B2B functions via plugins like WooCommerce B2B or B2BKing for a fraction of the cost. For smaller B2B stores, WooCommerce is often the more economical solution. For large enterprise B2B stores, Shopify Plus can offer the better infrastructure.
Do I need a developer for WooCommerce?
For a simple store with standard functions, you do not need a developer: installation and setup are doable with good tutorials. But as soon as you need individual customizations, special integrations or a tailor-made design, professional support makes sense. At GoldenWing, we offer tailor-made web design solutions for WooCommerce stores.
How much does it cost to have an online store built?
The costs vary widely depending on scope and platform. At GoldenWing, an online store is possible in the Premium package from €4,990 (unlimited pages, store possible), while enterprise projects with custom functions start from €9,990. You can find a detailed overview in our article What Does a Professional Website Cost?. Also take a look at our packages to get a feel for the price ranges.
Internationalization: Building Multilingual Stores
For Austrian online retailers who want to sell across the entire DACH region or beyond, internationalization is a decisive success factor. Shopify and WooCommerce take fundamentally different paths here.
Shopify Markets: The Integrated Solution
Shopify offers an integrated internationalization solution with Shopify Markets:
- Automatic currency conversion for multiple markets and currencies
- Geolocation-based redirection: visitors are automatically directed to the matching country version
- Local payment methods: EPS and Klarna for Austria
- Local domains: shop.at, shop.de, shop.ch with automatic hreflang management
- Costs: Fees depend on the plan and the chosen variant. The managed variant with duties and tax handling (Markets Pro or Managed Markets) is charged extra, and the current values are listed in Shopify's help center
Limitation: Shopify Markets manages markets, currencies and domains, while the translation of content comes from a separate app: the free Translate & Adapt app translates up to two languages automatically, and apps like Langify (free plan, paid plans from 17.50 USD/month) or Weglot (from 15 EUR/month excl. VAT) offer further features.
WooCommerce: Maximum Flexibility
WooCommerce has no built-in multilingual support, but it offers full control over the implementation:
- WPML + WooCommerce Multilingual (CMS plan from 99 EUR, including one year of updates and support): The gold standard for multilingual WooCommerce stores. Enables separate product descriptions, prices and shipping options per language
- Polylang + Polylang for WooCommerce (Polylang Pro and Polylang for WooCommerce each from 99 EUR/year excl. VAT): A more lightweight alternative with good value for money
- TranslatePress (from 99 EUR/year): Visual translation directly in the frontend, especially beginner-friendly
WooCommerce advantage: You can create completely separate product catalogs, prices and shipping rules for each country. With Shopify, you are bound to the structure of Shopify Markets.
SEO Implications of Internationalization
SEO configuration for multilingual stores is complex and error-prone. Pay attention to:
- Hreflang tags: Must be implemented correctly so that Google serves the right language version. Errors here can lead to duplicate content
- URL structure: Recommendation for the DACH region: subfolders (/de/, /at/, /ch/) instead of subdomains
- Localized content: Do not just translate, localize. "Versandkosten" is called "Lieferkosten" in Switzerland, and prices must be shown in CHF
- Local backlinks: Build separate backlinks for each country version from the respective market
Our Recommendation
For stores that sell exclusively in the DACH region: WooCommerce with WPML offers more control and lower costs in the long run. For stores with global ambitions (10+ countries): Shopify Markets saves considerable development time and offers a more consistent user experience.
App Ecosystem: Extensions Compared
The extensibility of a shop system determines whether you can cover growing requirements without having to switch the entire system.
Shopify App Store: Curated and Quality-Checked
The Shopify App Store includes over 16,000 apps (as of October 2026), all of which go through a review process:
Advantages:
- Quality control: Shopify checks every app for security, performance and usability
- One-click installation: Apps are ready to use immediately
- Consistent user interface: Most apps blend seamlessly into the Shopify admin
- Automatic updates: Apps are updated by the developer without you having to intervene manually
Disadvantages:
- Recurring costs: Most apps work with monthly subscription models. With many apps, the monthly costs add up noticeably
- Vendor lock-in: If an app is discontinued, you have to migrate
- Performance impact: Every app loads additional JavaScript code. More than 15 apps can noticeably affect load time
Top apps for the Austrian market:
- Klarna Checkout (free): The most popular payment provider in Austria
- Legal text apps (price depends on the provider): support for the legal notice, withdrawal policy and terms checkbox
- Sendcloud (price depends on plan and shipping volume): shipping software with connections to common carriers
WordPress Plugin Ecosystem: The Largest in the World
The WordPress plugin directory includes over 70,000 free plugins plus thousands of premium plugins:
Advantages:
- Huge selection: There are several options for practically every use case
- Many free options: Basic functionality is often free, premium versions offer extras
- One-time costs: Many premium plugins offer lifetime licenses or inexpensive annual licenses
- Open source: You can customize and extend plugins
Disadvantages:
- Quality varies widely: No central quality control like at Shopify
- Compatibility problems: Plugins from different developers can conflict with each other
- Security risks: According to Patchstack, 96% of newly reported WordPress vulnerabilities in 2024 were in plugins, so outdated plugins are a key entry point
- Update effort: You have to run updates regularly yourself and check compatibility
Cost comparison over 3 years:
The example calculation further above shows how high plugin and app costs can be over 3 years. They depend heavily on the selection and the providers.
Legal Requirements for Austrian Online Stores
Running an online store in Austria is subject to strict legal regulations. A violation can not only result in cease-and-desist letters but also damage your customers' trust. Both Shopify and WooCommerce offer solutions, but with different effort.
Mandatory Information and Legal Notice
Under the E-Commerce Act (ECG) and the Trade Regulation Act (Gewerbeordnung), Austrian online stores must provide the following information in an easily accessible way:
- Full name and address of the company
- Email address and phone number
- Commercial register number and commercial register court (if registered in the commercial register)
- VAT ID number (UID, value added tax identification number)
- Responsible supervisory authority (for regulated trades)
- Membership in the Chamber of Commerce (Wirtschaftskammer) and professional title
Shopify: Use the app "Legal Pages DACH" or "German Market" for legally compliant pages. These automatically generate legal notice, terms and conditions, withdrawal policy and privacy policy under Austrian law.
WooCommerce: The plugin "Germanized" or "German Market" (German Market from 87 EUR/year incl. VAT for one domain) supports the legal requirements for the DACH region, including the small business regulation and correct tax labeling.
GDPR Compliance
The General Data Protection Regulation affects every online store. Specifically, you must ensure:
- Cookie consent banner: Must obtain explicit consent before non-essential cookies are set. Recommended tools: Cookiebot (free plan for small websites, paid plans from 7 EUR/month) or Borlabs Cookie (paid license)
- Privacy policy: Must list all tools, tracking services and data processing used
- Data processing agreements (DPAs): Must be concluded with all service providers (hosting, payment, analytics, email marketing)
- Right to erasure: Customers must be able to have their data deleted
- Data export: Customers must be able to export their data in a common format
Consumer Rights Directive and Right of Withdrawal
For B2C stores, a 14-day right of withdrawal applies from receipt of the goods. You must:
- Link a withdrawal policy prominently (not just hide it in the terms and conditions)
- Provide a model withdrawal form
- Communicate the return shipping cost rule clearly (who bears the costs?)
- For digital products: obtain explicit consent to waive the right of withdrawal
Price Labeling
The Price Labeling Act (PrAG) requires:
- All prices must be stated including VAT (in Austria 20%, reduced to 10% or 13% for certain goods)
- Shipping costs must be clearly visible before the purchase is completed
- The base price must be stated for products sold by weight, volume or length (e.g. EUR/kg)
- For price reductions, the lowest price of the last 30 days must be stated as the reference price (Omnibus Directive)
Support and Community: Help When You Need It
When your store stops working at 10 p.m. on a Friday, the quality of support becomes the deciding factor. Shopify and WooCommerce differ fundamentally here.
Shopify Support
- 24/7 support via live chat: Directly from Shopify, listed for all plans on the pricing page
- Phone support: Priority 24/7 phone support is listed on the pricing page for the Plus plan
- Shopify Help Center: Extensive knowledge base with step-by-step guides
- Shopify Community Forum: Active community
- Shopify Experts: Certified freelancers and agencies for individual customizations (hourly rates vary by provider)
- Response time: depends on the plan and the request
WooCommerce Support
- No central support: WooCommerce itself does not offer direct customer support. Support comes from the hosting provider, theme developer and plugin developer
- WordPress.org forum: Large community, but answer quality and speed vary
- WooCommerce documentation: Extensive, but technically oriented
- Facebook groups and forums: Active German-language communities such as "WooCommerce Deutschland"
- Managed WooCommerce hosting: Specialized providers offer WooCommerce-specific support
What This Means in Practice
Scenario 1: Payment problem:
With Shopify, you contact the central support team. With WooCommerce, you have to figure out yourself whether the problem lies with the payment plugin, the theme or the hosting, and then contact the respective support.
Scenario 2: Performance problem:
Shopify optimizes the infrastructure automatically. With WooCommerce, you have to configure caching plugins, perform database optimization and possibly upgrade the hosting plan.
Our advice: If you do not have a technical team and your store is your main business, Shopify's support is a strong argument. Depending on the hourly rate, the cost of a WooCommerce developer when problems arise can quickly exceed the monthly Shopify fees.
Analytics and Reporting: Data as a Basis for Decisions
Analyzing sales data, customer behavior and store performance is a central success factor in e-commerce. Both Shopify and WooCommerce offer extensive analytics functions, but they differ considerably in scope, ease of use and extensibility. For Austrian online retailers who want to make data-based decisions, a detailed comparison of the reporting options is essential.
Shopify's Integrated Analytics
Shopify offers an integrated analytics dashboard whose scope varies by plan. Even the basic plan (from 32 euros per month with monthly billing) gives you access to basic reports on revenue, orders, online store sessions and returning customer rate. The Grow plan (from 92 euros per month with monthly billing) adds more detailed reports, including sales reports by staff member, by discount code and by traffic source.
The Advanced and Plus plans finally offer the Report Builder, with which you can create custom reports. This tool allows the combination of different dimensions and metrics, similar to a pivot table. For larger Austrian e-commerce companies, the ability to perform cohort analyses and calculate customer lifetime value (CLV) is especially valuable.
Shopify's real-time reports deserve special mention. The Live View dashboard shows you in real time:
- Current visitors on your website and their geographic origin
- Products that are being viewed right now
- Cart activity and ongoing checkout processes
- Revenue of the last minutes and hours
The integrated analytics can be used to make assortment decisions based on your own sales data.
WooCommerce Analytics Ecosystem
WooCommerce takes a modular approach to data analysis. Since version 4.0, the core plugin offers a revised analytics dashboard with reports on revenue, orders, products, categories, coupons and taxes. These reports are considerably more extensive than in earlier versions, but do not match the depth of Shopify's Advanced reports.
The real strength of WooCommerce lies in its extensibility through plugins and external tools:
- Metorik (paid, price depends on store size): Offers a comprehensive dashboard with real-time data, email automation based on purchase behavior and automated reports
- MonsterInsights: Simplifies the integration of Google Analytics 4 and shows e-commerce data directly in the WordPress dashboard
- WooCommerce Google Analytics Pro: Advanced e-commerce tracking integration with GA4, including Enhanced E-Commerce events
- Jetpack Stats: Basic visitor statistics directly in the WordPress dashboard
A major advantage of WooCommerce is complete data sovereignty. All transaction data sits in your own database and can be connected to any BI tools (business intelligence) such as Google Looker Studio, Power BI or Tableau. For Austrian companies that must meet strict data protection requirements, this is a weighty advantage over Shopify's cloud solution.
Tax Reporting for the Austrian Market
An often overlooked aspect of e-commerce reporting is tax reporting. In Austria, since the EU-wide introduction of the One-Stop-Shop procedure (OSS), online retailers must prepare VAT returns for cross-border B2C sales.
Shopify offers an integrated tax reporting function that breaks down revenue by country and tax rate. For the Austrian market, with the standard rate of 20 percent and the reduced rate of 10 percent (for example for food or books), this works reliably. The data can be exported as CSV and handed to the tax advisor.
WooCommerce requires additional configuration here. The plugin WooCommerce EU VAT Compliance or Taxamo helps with the automatic calculation and documentation of EU-wide VAT. The advantage: the data sits in your own database and can be connected directly to Austrian accounting software such as BMD or DATEV.
Practical Recommendation
For choosing the analytics solution, the following scenarios are recommended:
- Beginners and small stores: Shopify's integrated analytics are sufficient and require no additional configuration. Supplement with Google Analytics 4 for traffic analysis
- Growing stores: With WooCommerce, you should invest in a professional analytics plugin. With Shopify, upgrading to the Advanced plan is usually enough
- Enterprise stores: Regardless of the platform, you should use a dedicated BI tool that brings together data from shop, CRM, ERP and marketing channels
Headless Commerce: The Future of E-Commerce
Headless commerce separates the frontend (the user interface) from the backend (inventory management, order management, payment processing) and connects both via APIs. This approach is becoming increasingly important in the DACH region, especially for companies that sell across multiple channels and want to offer a seamless customer experience.
Shopify Hydrogen and Headless
With Hydrogen, Shopify has developed its own React-based framework for headless commerce storefronts. In combination with Oxygen (Shopify's hosting platform for Hydrogen stores), Shopify offers a complete headless solution from a single source.
The advantages of Shopify Hydrogen:
- Storefront API: A powerful GraphQL API that provides access to products, collections, customers and carts
- Shopify Functions: Enable server-side logic for discounts, shipping calculation and payment customization
- Performance: Hydrogen stores can be very fast, but actual performance depends heavily on the implementation
- Global edge delivery: Through Oxygen, the store is delivered via a global CDN, with edge servers in Europe as well
However, Hydrogen requires solid React and JavaScript skills. The development costs for a Hydrogen store depend heavily on complexity and should be calculated individually.
WooCommerce in Headless Mode
WooCommerce offers a REST API and, with the plugin WPGraphQL WooCommerce, also a GraphQL interface. Next.js, Nuxt.js or Gatsby are typically used as frontend frameworks. The combination of WordPress as a content backend and WooCommerce as a commerce backend offers a particularly flexible architecture.
Advantages of the WooCommerce headless approach:
- Maximum flexibility: You can use any frontend framework and are not bound to a proprietary ecosystem
- Content and commerce combined: WordPress as a CMS delivers editorial content, WooCommerce the store. Both are provided via a unified API
- Open source: No license costs and full control over the code
- Existing infrastructure: Companies that already use WordPress can migrate to headless step by step
The challenge lies in the higher complexity of the infrastructure. You need separate hosting environments for backend and frontend, a robust API layer and a well-thought-out caching concept. For Austrian companies, a hosting setup with European data centers is recommended to ensure GDPR compliance and low latencies.
When Does Headless Commerce Pay Off?
Headless commerce is not the right solution for every company. The approach pays off especially if you have the following requirements:
- Multi-channel sales: You sell via website, app, social commerce and possibly IoT devices
- High performance requirements: Your customers expect load times under one second, even with heavy traffic
- Complex personalization: You want to individually tailor the shopping experience based on user behavior, location and purchase history
- Internationalization: You serve multiple markets with different languages, currencies and regulatory requirements
For small to medium-sized Austrian online stores with revenue under 500,000 euros per year, the classic monolithic approach (either Shopify with themes or WooCommerce with a good theme) is usually the more economical solution. The overhead of a headless architecture only pays off from a certain size and complexity.
Conclusion: Shopify or WooCommerce?
There is no universally right answer: the best platform depends on your individual situation.
Choose Shopify if:
